CUA Biology and Medical Technology Department Home Page

Medical Technology is the branch of medicine concerned with the performance of the laboratory determinations and analyses used in the diagnosis and treatment of disease and the maintenance of health. Medical Technologists use their problem solving knowledge as well as technical skills to operate and repair laboratory instruments, monitor quality-control programs, produce patient test results and compare the results with the stages and symptoms of diseases. Medical Technologists are prepared to perform these sophisticated chemical and biological analyses in the areas of hematology, microbiology, clinical chemistry and immunohematology.

At CUA, Medical Technology is a Bachelor of Science Degree program that is available through the Department of Biology. Medical technologists spend the first three years of the program completing course work at CUA. The fourth year, consisting of clinical studies, is spent at Washington Hospital Center and includes a series of courses and supervised laboratory rotations in clinical chemistry, hematology, immunohematology and microbiology.
